Since its inception, the North Edmonton Minor Football Association has been built and maintained by a network of dedicated and selfless volunteers who work to ensure that north Edmonton children get to enjoy the great sport of football. Like our founder, Marv Mills, these people give freely of themselves without asking for any recognition in return, which is one reason why it is extra special when they get some.

On Saturday the 29th, at the Edmonton Eskimos salute to Minor Football, a member of our coaching staff was recognized in the Subway Amateur Football Spotlight. Jason Wetsch, the current Peewee Head Coach, had the honour of receiving more nominations than any other nominee chosen for the program before him. He has coached with every level of our club over the last four years (Head Coach Atoms 2015, 2016, Head Coach Bantams 2017, Head Coach Peewees 2018, Midget Defensive Coach 2016, 2017,2018), as well as with Eastglen High School for the last three.

As one nominee put it, the Seahawks are “a program that strives to develop and play ALL players, a club that everyone calls a Family. This was a club and coach that actually meant it and focused on development, family, and fun.”

Jason was nominated by a number of different parents, players and former players for his dedication to his teams, his positive coaching style and his ability to make football fun. Below are quotes from a few of his nominations.

“This coach puts so much time and effort into teaching young kids the love of football with kindness and patience. He is amazing!!”

“Jason has helped my son achieve physical fitness, respect for himself and his teammates and changed our lives. I am crying right now typing this as two years ago I could never have imagined how great this has turned out and how much of a positive influence Jason has made on all our lives.”

“As one of the most knowledgeable coaches I know Coach Jason Wetsch has supported me and inspired me through two seasons of high school football and one season of midget football pushing me and teaching me lots of aspects of the game while supporting me through all the way into Junior football where he still comes out to watch me play!”

“He is one of the most supportive coaches in the world he never yells or puts his players down and is an all-around good guy. I couldn’t imagine my football team without him.”

“I have even written about coach Jason in a school project about people who inspire me, and that's exactly what he does, he inspires me to play better every practice and every game.”

“As a parent, I have watched my son go from a self-doubting, fearful, bullied teenager, to a confident, strong, hard-working young man …We owe all of this to Coach Jason”

Jason received tickets to the game and was a guest of the Eskimos on the sidelines. He was featured on the jumbotron in the 3rd quarter. You can see the video below.

Well done Jason! The Seahawks are lucky you are part of our Seahawks family.
